The importance of synthesizing spherical, high purity graphitized polymer carbons (GPC) and spherical, high purity carbon molecular sieves (CMS) is realized when analyzing trace levels of analytes in liquid and gas phase environments. The use of new spherical GPC and CMS particles in packed bed systems and coated devices provides a recent advancement in these technologies. Carbon blacks have also been graphitized for use in bench-scale sample preparation processes. These three carbon materials provide effective mass balance in adsorption and desorption processes, since quantification is required.
