The hull (2) with inclined grooves (1) naval vessels to harness wave energy as an aid to propulsion. The grooves may take the form of channel sections which may be rigidly fixed to the hull or may be demountable, being angled to the water line to convert sea swell into a propulsion force. The inclination may be reversed to provide a braking effect when a vessel is docking.
