Process and machine for the retraction of a flexible sheath formed by a film of heat-shrink plastics material covering a palletized load and which consists in channelling the hot air against the sheath 2 by blocking the effect of natural convection by an adjustment of the upper opening 9 of the output of the hood 7, and by a space provided between the hood 7 and a frame of retraction 4, the circulation of hot air is effected by a first path of the escape through the first slot 9 in the upper part, and by a second path of lateral escape through a second opening 20 in the vicinity of said space.
